about "spalted" timber

Spalting is actually caused by a fungus and is an early stage of the natural process of decay, yet it seems to bring out hidden lines and structures within the timber rather than destroying them, and is still structurally sound. When the right conditions occur and the timber is caught at just the right time, dried and treated it can be preserved to capture beautiful patterns. Good spalted timber is highly prized by woodworkers. Because it occurs in the early stages of naturally dying trees, there is no wasteful use of resources.

"illumenart" was born from the background of Kilkenny Design Consultancy's design studio and workshop in the city of Kilkenny, which itself grew from the heritage of Ireland's national design authority which was based at the Castle Yard in Kilkenny between 1963 and 1989. 

In our design studio it has always been our desire to design and make beautiful things. Modern lighting technology harnessed with the beauty of nature seemed an irresistable match made in heaven, hence the the Rivers of Light series was born. 

Imagery from the Bible has been the inspiration for many of the motifs for the pieces, as this amazing book has a wonderful message for our time - that our Creator God not only loves us and cares for His wonderful creation but also for us as individuals, and in Jesus Christ we can have hope for today and for the future. In a time of uncertainty and darkness for many, the message of light is one we need to hear today.
